Just How Small is an Atom?

Updated: Apr 21, 2021

Ya. You read that right. But just in case you didn't or can't quite comprehend it, here it is in other terms:

Dust is to Earth as an Atom is to Dust.

Okay here's another way:

Imagine you are on Google earth, and you double click to zoom in, and then you zoom in some more, and then some more, and then even more. And you keep zooming in until you can make out that single piece of dust floating in the air in the light of the sun shining through a window. All of a sudden you have went from the granger of the size of Earth, and zoomed in so much to see that tiny spec of dust. Quite the difference in size ya?

Well imagine there was a "Google Dust" where you could explore that single spec of dust like you did the Earth. You would have to zoom in the same amount of times that you did on "Google Earth" to see an atom! Atoms are infinitesimally small!

and one more way

If there were tiny, microscopic humans living on a dust particle....they would be swiffering atoms.

And so we are here, talking about something super cool and interesting. Its crazy how something so small can blow our minds this much! But guess what, on average, humans are made up of 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms! Thats 7 x 10^27 or 7 octillion atoms! So if you're ever feeling down or depressed, just know that you are 7 octillion times as interesting as an atom!
